An accident occurred in the grounds of Grænuvellir preschool in Húsavík during the weekend. A man who was there playing with his children fell through the floor of a play castle.
"I do not know how badly he was injured, but there were some injuries as a result of the incident," says Jón Höskuldsson, education officer for Norðurþing municipality.
The equipment in question had been cordoned off and has now been taken out of use.
Equipment is closed if it is not safe
There are 150 children at Grænuvellir preschool. It is a long-established preschool and its grounds are showing their age. This is the third piece of equipment to be taken out of use there in a short period.
The equipment has simply become worn, and in our assessment it is not safe to use it in its current condition. Our rule is that in those circumstances the equipment is closed, and if it is deemed beyond repair, it is removed.
There is no defect in the equipment, but the structure that gave way over the weekend is 11 years old and Jón says it was due for maintenance.
Parents concerned
It is hoped that improvements to the grounds can begin as soon as possible, although they cannot be expanded. Parents of children at the preschool are naturally concerned about their poor condition.
Parents have not contacted either him or the education department, although there has been discussion among them about the need for improvements.
Jón hopes the preschool grounds will be next on the municipality's construction programme, although there are plenty of other projects to deal with, including maintenance of the administrative building, improvements to the sports hall floor and work on the swimming pool at Lundur in Öxarfjörður.
